Dropbox is an extremely popular file-sharing service, it's well known that academics choose to use the free-tier of Dropbox for two purposes:
- Syncing files between devices
- Backing up files (despite it NOT being a backup solution)
- Sharing files with collaborators
It's important to remember Dropbox is not a backup service; deleted files and historical versions of files are only backed up for 30 days, and you cannot "restore your computer" from Dropbox - only raw files. However, Dropbox is a legitimate and useful tool for syncing files between devices and to collaborate with your research group.
When you're ready to publish your data, please do make a copy of your data from Dropbox into a fully featured data repository.
